GoNintendo • View topic - Female representation in Nintendo games ...

While Nintendo doesn't delve into making deep narratives in their games, they still make charismatic characters and scenarios to attach the player emotionally to their products. So even if it's a bit cherry picked, I think Nintendo has been subtly trying to change it's stance of how gender roles at adding active roles to more female characters across, Mario, Zelda, Smash, Captain Toad and reintroducing Dixie in Tropical Freeze it seems Nintendo is changing a bit in that sense.

Now on the horizon Splatoon seemingly has female hero (though could be a non gender character). Aonuma has commented tangentially of considering both giving Zelda a more active role or make the hero a female at some point. Xenoblade X to a lesser extent seems to let you be either a boy or a girl.

This year:

Smash - Unisex characters, Palutena, Rosalina, Lucina [Newcomers]

DKC: TF - Dixie

Captain Toad - Toadette

Hyrule Warriors - Zelda, Impa, Cia/Lana, Ruto

Bayonetta

Previous year:

W-101: Wonder Pink

Pikmin 3: Brittany

Mario 3D World: Peach and Rosalina

I mean I suppose the next Mario could have Peach kidnapped again, but I think after 3D World its kind of pointless both because it shows both Rosalina being as capable as Marioand more so that the kidnapping premise really can be THAT interchangeable, you could have a bad guy kidnapping Bowser (although that'll be funnier for a Mario RPG).

Do you like the unisex neutral and equal ground approach Nintendo has had? Can there be an appealing way to make a game with a female centered protagonist that isn't just a gender bend approach to a male lead (I mean this is admitted to be a very hard thing to do, in terms of mass appealing games).
