DEVELOPER: Sora/Bandai Namco Games

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?: Super Smash Bros. is the seminal brawler from Nintendo that mashes up its various franchises into a wonderful miss-mash of nostalgia, reverence and camaraderie. It’s the kind of game that suits all types, from first-time button mashers to those looking to dig deep into move sets, and puts them on equal ground.

No matter how you play these games, there is a certain amount of replayability that just isn’t seen in videogames very often. Trying to master every character will take you a long time, not to mention the variants you could play with. There’s even usually a substantial amount of content for a lone player as well, including but not limited to the copious amount of historically entertaining trophies as well as achievements that force you to play the game in different ways.

Nintendo is holding this version back until this winter which makes sense — it’ll be a system seller and on a lot of kids’ wish lists come Black Friday.

WHY DO I CARE?: Well, besides all that was mentioned above, it’s a game I’m really looking forward to playing with my kids, my brothers, my friends or whoever I can get to hold onto a controller. It’s the type of game that should remind us that playing games online can’t really hold a candle to jostling with others huddled together on a couch.

I’m even tempted to pick up that GameCube controller adapter and bringing my Wave Birds out of retirement…
