I’ve played most of the Zelda titles Nintendo has developed throughout gaming history and none of them are better for a portable than A Link Between Worlds.

Role playing games are usually epically long and require a commitment of many hours to complete. The journey can takes weeks and become redundant as you get to the latter stages. Perhaps that’s why I was very hesitant to take on Zelda’s latest title. I’m glad I manned-up and took on the challenge.

Zelda: A Link Between Words sets the bar mile-high in portable action game design. This RPG title is one of the very few that can be taken on the go and played in short spurts and still make significant progress. As a player who relies on portables to get my gaming fix, it’s so refreshing to find something that can keep me entertained without stealing me away from the real world for too long. In the past, games from this genre felt like huge burdens on my schedule. I would have to invest hours upon hours to feel like I was making any progress. A Link Between worlds removes the redundancy and unnecessary backtracking of past Zelda titles and focuses on puzzles and missions that advance the story at a much faster and satisfying pace.

It’s not so much the speed of the game that won me over, I fell in love with the art style and how it compliments the gaming experience. The transition between a topdown 3D view and a flat, paper-like cartoon is as fluid as running water. It’s an edgy approach to a fan-favorite and I’m happy that Nintendo took some risks for once. The 3DS has in Between Worlds the best looking gaming and one of the most fun to pick up and play.
