Today marks the 25th anniversary of the release of the original Game Boy in Japan! 25 years later, and Nintendo’s handhelds are still an unstoppable force, largely due to the success of the original Game Boy.
The Game Boy was the handheld that introduced the world to Pokemon, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, and many other classics, and is also responsible for turning Tetris into one of gaming’s earliest phenomenons. It had the ‘longest life’ of any Nintendo platform, due to the constant stream of popular titles released on the handheld that always kept it relevant. And, for a time, the Game Boy was the best selling video game platform of all time (it has since been outsold by the PS2 and Nintendo DS).
Twenty-five years ago today, Nintendo’s dominance in the handheld market began. Let us take the time whip out our Nintendo 3DSs and give thanks to the little handheld that made it all possible. Happy birthday, Game Boy!
