That aside, signs are looking positive so far. As long as the difficulty curve continues to gently rise as it has in the courses we've played, and as long as the online tournaments aren't prone to indirectly punishing players using the manual control method, this has the potential to be one of the better games in the Mario Golf series.

To be perfectly honest, I didn't have that much hands-on time with World Tour. The four of us played our brief, six-round match in about 15 minutes. We'll have to wait and see how deep the single-player mode turns out to be, and how solid the online play runs. But regardless of all of that, the local multiplayer reminded me of why I fell in love with Mario Golf 64 15 years ago, and honestly, that's more than enough.
