Wii U, meet 3DS, as Nintendo plans to unify console and portable gaming divisions

Changes are afoot at Nintendo, using the Japanese gaming giant set to unify its console and handheld divisions into a single entity. So the Wii U and 3DS, or whatever replace them, will be produced by teams sharing knowledge and technology.

The aim? To speed in the development process, that may mean a quicker turnover of consoles, and also slicker interaction between the company's portable and lounge-based gaming systems. Which has becoming a good thing for gamers.

Kyoto facility

Nikkei reports that the move is the biggest organisational change in Nintendo for nine years, and may happen in the following month.

Nintendo is considered to be pumping $340 million in to the merged operation, opening a whole new development facility in Kyoto right at the end of this year.

The company may be struggling these days, with the 3DS and Wii U not performing as well as it would have liked. It posted its first loss after the last financial year, dropping a lot more than $530 million. In the first half of the financial year, sales were down 7 % compared to the year before. Net income has also been way down, in order that it has a lot to complete if it would like to turn around its fortunes.
