It hasn’t been the easiest few years for Nintendo in terms of profitability or financial success. However, the success of the Wii has helped steady the Japanese ship somewhat and now the gaming giant has released a new spin-off dubbed the Wii U. So without any delay, let’s see which version of the Wii gives more bang for the buck.
Hardware
The original Wii is now a few years old so its hardware isn’t as powerful as it could be. Inside the console, there is a ATU Hollywood graphics card whilst it contains 88MB of internal memory and produces a display quality of 480p SD. This is some way behind the new Wii U which has 2GB of RAM combined with a more powerful AMD Radeon HD card. The Wii U is also the first Nintendo console to broadcast content in full HD at 1080i and helps keep Nintendo up to date with rival companies.

Software
In terms of the number of titles available for each console, there isn’t much in it. The Wii U is back compatible with the Wii which means that any Wii title will work on both consoles including many of the launch titles for the Wii U. However, the original Wii is also back compatible with Nintendo’s previous console, the Game Cube, meaning that someone can play almost any Nintendo game from this century on the original Wii.

Features and package
There’s no denying the achievements of the original Wii with the console outselling both the PS3 and Xbox 360. With the ability to sync with the portable DS and contain built in Wi-FI to connect to the Internet, most owners will be happy with the base version. The newer Wii U contains even more technology such as NFC and on-demand apps such as Hulu and Youtube to help the latest addition become an entire media hub. However, the Wii U is going to cost $350 which is around double of what the original Wii is worth at the minute on shop shelves.

Closing Comments
The release of the Wii U is certainly going to help Nintendo capitalise on the success of the basic Wii console and it will keep it up to date with modern technology. However, with a greater number of titles available and being slightly cheaper, the original Wii is still slightly more value for money than its brand new cousin.
