News: The 3DS software sales have increased this past year by 89% with the help New Super Mario Bros. 2, and Mario Kart 7.
I’m not one to post numbers usually, but it’s certainly noteworthy that the Nintendo 3DS software sales have increased 89% from September 2011 – September 2012.
The 3DS XL is part of the reason for the success. Between the two 3DS’s, the XL is the go-to now; people obviously buying games with it. It’s not rocket-science, but the beefed up version has had an impact. “Nintendo 3DS XL continues to galvanize our Nintendo 3DS business,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Hardware sales are up, software sales are increasing exponentially and the attach rate is growing stronger every month.”
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Star Fox 64 3D, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Mario Kart 7, and New Super Mario Bros. 2, which sold 295,000 units in its second month, have been the leading software for the 3D handheld.
In an unrelated note, Super Mario 64 DS is still selling apparently, recently reaching the 5 million mark – the 3rd DS game to do so in the US alone – joining New Super Mario Bros. (10.6 million units), and Mario Kart DS (8.5 million units).
There is certainly something going well for the 3DS. Even I’ve purchased one and am excited for the possibilities. However, we’ll see what happens this holiday season with the Wii U coming out. It’s going to be interesting to see how that will impact sales.
