Nintendo 3DS Software is Doing a Lot Better Than it Was Last Year ...

Nintendo recently released its monthly sales recap, and while there aren’t as many hard numbers as we’re typically used to seeing in terms of hardware sales, software seems to be doing more than okay. The company says they actually managed to sell 89% more games than they did in September of last year – and that despite 3DS seeing a hefty price cut that month. Apparently it’s all thanks to New Super Mario Bros. 2 and the influx of new users brought in by 3DS XL.

In addition, a ton of older games saw sales increases over August, including Kid Icarus: Uprising, Mario Kart 7, Star Fox 64 3D, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. I presume Super Mario 3D Land has been left out because New Super Mario Bros. 2 has more or less swept in to replace it? All is as it should be, I suppose.

Another fun fact: Super Mario 64 DS became the third Nintendo DS title to top 5 million sales in North America. The other two shouldn’t surprise you – they’re New Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart DS.

Read on for a quote on 3DS’s performance from Nintendo of America VP of Sales & Marketing Scott Moffitt.

Nintendo 3DS XL continues to galvanize our Nintendo 3DS business. Hardware sales are up, software sales are increasing exponentially and the attach rate is growing stronger every month. With a great slate of upcoming games, including Paper Mario: Sticker Star, which arrives exactly one month from today, we like our position heading into the crucial holiday selling season.

Mario is king – and I think that’s to be expected by now.
