Spain gives Shigeru Miyamoto the unprecedented Prince of Asturias Award for Communications and Humanities 2012. It was a jury decision which deliberated for 2 days.
Now this is a rough translation of the Spanish article which can be found here, which I found out via Nintendo Everything:
Shigeru Miyamoto is one of the finalists competing against the photo agency Magnum, the French Philosopher Edgar Morin, and around 20 other candidates for the prestigious award. I am not quite sure in the translation if this is the third time a Japanese was nominated or if this is Miyamoto-san's third nomination.
Ooh, he was honored in 2010 and 2011 as well. The article mentions him being born in Kyoto, working for Nintendo for all his life, and being one of the most prominent figure in the gaming industry. The article is wrong. He IS gaming's most prominent figure. Hands Down. It also noted him creating Mario and Zelda, and that he has been instrumental in transforming Nintendo by developing titles like Nintendogs, WiiFit and Wii Music. They also noted the hardcore titles Miyamoto supervised in recent years - Super Mario Galaxy and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
In his speech, Miyamoto said he was honored to receive the award and that this "illustrious" award represents not only his work but also the work of his friends and colleagues with whom he has worked throughout his career. He mentions that he will strive to make video games that will consistently provide fun and joy to people of all generations and around the world.
Pretty cool stuff. Shigeru Miyamoto-san. Please don't rest yet. Continue supervising the young people in your company to make video games.
