Nintendo in a press release yesterday made quite a lot of noise over a successful month of August according to some fancy pants-y research. It was always set to be a very interesting month for the company as they were releasing the XL version of their Nintendo 3DS handheld as well as two big titles in New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.
But, how good did those sales turn out? According to The NPD's August report, New Super Mario Bros. 2 sold more than 240,000 units while Kingdom Hearts moved more than 180,000 units. Both were highly anticipated releases and these numbers very much prove that these properties still have quit a bit of juice left. They weren't completely innovative revisions on the titles before them, but it seems that consumers are more than happy to pick up a title on at least the name brand alone.
For those curious, Nintendo added that 3DS software sales as a whole grew 68% over sales in July and hardware sales increased 36% over the same month. Again, this was taken from the August report done by The NPD group.
