The 3DS’s second-best Mario game is getting some paid DLC starting next week in Japan, reports the polygonal, disembodied head and hands of Satoru Iwata in the latest Nintendo Direct. Beginning October 2nd, Japanese gamers will be given the opportunity to beam 200 Yen at Nintendo in exchange for the first of three Coin Rush packs.

Each pack will contain three levels, though it is unclear whether these levels will be individually selectable, since the Coin Rush mode is structured sequentially. The theme of the first pack, titled Gold Mario Go! Go! Pack, features—you guessed it!—ridiculous amounts of gold. And going! Going! They seem like fairly easy levels, focusing less on tricky platforming and more on the inherent fun of running around as Gold Mario, turning blocks and enemies into gold, with a Gold Block on your head. GOLD YOU GUYS.

The second pack is Nintendo’s zany take on leaderboards. Anybody that buys and plays this pack will have their high scores posted on Nintendo’s website. So… no checking your score against other people directly on the 3DS, then. In Japan, this pack will be called Challenge the Record A Pack, implying that there may be more Challenge the Record packs forthcoming. In North America, it might be called the Check Out Our Website U Guys Pack, though no official titles have been announced in other territories.

The last, and undeniably most intriguing, is the simply named Survival Pack. These levels pit Mario against impossible odds, like a dozen Hammer Bros or possibly a wall of lava or something. This pack should separate the Mario’s from the Luigi’s with precision platforming and unfair enemy placement. In this analogy, the Luigi’s would be people that can’t play Mario games very well, i.e. anybody that doesn’t constantly hold down the run button.

No word yet on release dates or pricing anywhere outside the glorious land of Nippon, but that should change soon. Stay tuned.
