New Super Mario Bros. 2 sold over 240,000 copies at retail in North America during the month of August, Nintendo have revealed.
The Nintendo 3DS game took the #2 spot on the NPD top-ten chart for the month. Nintendo, however, did not reveal sales figures for the download version of the game, which was released simultaneously with the retail version.
At #3 was Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, also for the Nintendo 3DS. This game, Nintendo say, sold over 180,000 copies.
For the sake of comparison, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, which was released for the PSP in 2010, sold 225,000 copies in its first month.
Kingdom Hearts 3D has also sold less than Birth by Sleep in Japan. Possible reasons for this decline that have been discussed in the past include:
1. A lower 3DS userbase than for PSP when Birth by Sleep was released.
2. New characters in Birth by Sleep, making it more approachable for newcomers.
3. A long-running storyline spread across several platforms, making it harder for the average player to keep up with each subsequent game.
4. This one is U.S.-specific, but Birth by Sleep also launched with a PSP bundle in North America.
