Demo Impressions: Theatrhythm Final Fantasy - Nintendo 3DS ...

Hello again and welcome to Demo Impressions! This time, I’ll give you my thoughts on a demo that was released without any previous notice. I think pretty much nobody knew it was going to be released until it was made available. I’m talking about the Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Demo.

First off, I want to say that I’m not a big fan of rhythm games. In fact, I’ve played several games of the genre before, on both the DS and 3DS, and I haven’t liked them one bit! However, things are different with Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, and you’ll discover why if you keep reading.

What’s really amazing about this demo is that it does not have a limited use restriction. In fact, you can play it as much as you like! And no, I’m not kidding. It’s great that someone finally decided to release a demo which isn’t limited to a mere 30 uses. That is one more reason why this demo is worth downloading, despite being quite big (it takes over 800 blocks in your SD Card). But now, let’s move on to the technical aspects.

I want to begin with the graphics by saying they are good. Not great, just good. However, I feel like in this particular type of game, what matters most is the gameplay and soundtrack. The 3D effect is nice as well. However, it’s nothing that really stands out; so I found myself playing mostly with the effect off.

Now let’s talk about the music. Essentially, the music is the heart and soul of the game; so fans of Final Fantasy will instantly recognize the whole soundtrack, and those who are not, will certainly enjoy it as well, especially if you are wearing headphones while playing. However, as far as the demo is concerned, it only allows you to play two songs, which I think is kind of disappointing. Obviously, the demo is meant to give you only a glimpse at the full version, but I think they could have included a couple more songs.

Last, but not least, let’s talk about the gameplay. This is the aspect I liked the most about the demo. It’s quite simple actually. All of it is controlled with the Touch Screen, so the buttons are useless. The only thing you have to do is to either touch or slide. On the upper screen, you will see the notes you have to hit and a background that will tell a story, depending on the song you’re playing. Some interesting battles will also be played out from time to time on the top screen. However, you will find that you won’t play attention to all that at all, because you’ll be focused on purely which notes you have to hit.

You’ll see 4 lines of notes coming at you at different times. However, this isn’t about precision, as I said before, it’s only about either touching or sliding, which is actually amazing, because many games of this genre out there require amazing precision with the touch screen and it can get very frustrating at times; so I think this is the best decision the developers could have taken.

All in all, the demo for Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, and the game in general really surprised me. I did not expect to like it so much. And for a guy that does not like rhythm games a lot, that’s quite an accomplishment! So, do yourself a favor and go download this demo from the North American eShop right now!
